The jump drive is definitely fixed.  I took the ship home, had one of the engineers double-check my work (she replaced the fuel generator and about half the bio-gel in the computer, and cussed me out the whole time for what I’d done to “her” meaning my ship.)  To celebrate, I decided to find someplace new in Koenigsburg.  I was directed to a tavern called the Alley Cats, in a poor section of the city.

It’s an interesting place, run by a trio of ex-adventurers.  If you’re ever in Koenigsburg, I recommend it.

Last, but certainly not least, is the city called Golden Path of the Setting Sun.  Western names are beautiful, but they are a mouthful.  This city is the largest of the west coast cities, both in terms of territory and population.  It’s the only western city to include floating fishing towns within its borders.  The city is laid out in overlapping circles centered on fifteen plain megaliths.  I haven’t been able to find any information on where the stones came from, or how they got there.  I didn’t even find any of the usual “the gods did it’ legends.

Eight years ago (Erde’s time) a minor noble seized power in the city of Divine Peace.  Proclaiming himself a god on earth and king of the city, he adopted the name Sozetsu Kyoi.  While the name is generally taken to mean Sublime Thunder, it can also mean Imminent Danger.  And while the city is quite peaceful, it’s more the quiet before the storm…  or the peace of the grave.

I don’t believe I will be touring there any time soon.

One of the more interesting city-states of the west is the city of Precious Moonlight.   People don’t get up until mid-morning (unless they have to care for animals or some such) and they stay up well past mid-night.  They eat lightly during the day, and feast in the late evening.  The rest of the night is given over to music and dancing, games and theatre, fortune-telling and sex. When I get my ship fixed I am definitely going to visit.  I seriously need a vacation.

So, I have been stuck in Koenigsburg for several weeks now.  Something is wrong with my ship, and I can’t move around Erde much less leave.  So I have been reading.  A lot.  There are some very interesting works about the cities and cultures of the west coast. Swimming Flowers (such a beautiful name) is an island city dedicated to producing beautiful things.  As soon as I can get my ship moving, I’m going to go visit.

Far to the north, where mountains and sea meet in a never-ending clash, is a keep built by the Svartalfar.  They named it Two Dragons in honor of the raging white river and the turbulent sea. Though the tall, muscular Svartalfar abandoned their keep centuries ago, humans and Halflings have made Two Dragons their home, and turned it into a prosperous, thriving port.

A gnomish city – the only gnomish city on Erde.  With a simple gnomish name.  And gnomish construction.  This pleasant terraced city, with meandering streets and beautiful gardens, would be a nightmare of navigation to any non-gnomish visitor.  This is why there are several inns and taverns near the docks that are built to human scale, accommodating travelers, merchants, and diplomats.  The most popular is an inn named A Place For Big, Clumsy People to Sleep, located at the end of Long Windy Road That Goes Down To The Docks.

This week I decided to add two more artifacts to the Legendary Artifacts list: The Basket of Yung-Qi, and The Stick.  The Stick is probably my favorite and, since I have two puppies in the house, I really wish I had this one.  Waking up to splinters in the bed is No Fun.

I thought it was time to tell you a little about the nation of Annan’s Port and Koenigsburg, since I seem to be spending so much of my time here.  I’ve listened to a lot of their songs and stories, and I suspect the Velloren people aren’t originally from Erde.  Many of their words are so close to Dutch, or German, or Norwegian, and I swear at least one of the Great Hero stories is a retelling of Beowulf.
